Mission Projects
CCU
(Christian Churches United) is an ecumenical partnership with over 140 member churches in Dauphin, Cumberland, and Perry counties. Its goal is to provide assistance to many more people in need than one church could provide on its own. MPC is a member. Go to www.ccuhbg.org.
CCU's main programs are (1) Susquehanna Harbor Safe Haven, a prison ministry, (2) Help Ministry, a general assistance program, and (3) a Food Pantry.
CHOSEN
- Christian Hospitals Overseas Secure Equipment Needs was established in 1969, is based in Erie, PA. and is an interdenominational program which ships new and refurbished obsolete (by American standards) hospital equipment to facilities in underdeveloped countries. Shipments go where medical missionaries are assigned to serve. Much of the original equipment is donated by new equipment providers and hospitals from “trade-in” inventories. CHOSEN refurbishes the equipment, ensures that it is in working order, and ships it to places of great need.
- In 2010 CHOSEN completed 107 projects, spread among 33 countries on four continents. Look for more information here.
- Last year MPC donated $800 to this work. Cash contributions support refurbishing and shipping activities. MPC members and friends who may have connections to candidate equipment or who want to make direct cash contributions are invited to contact Cathay Snyder (766-5899), chair of the Mission Committee.
Operation Paperback
Operation Paperback is a non-profit organization incorporated in Pennsylvania that collects gently used books nationwide and sends them to American troops deployed overseas and their families. Go to www.operationpaperback.org for more information.
Since its inception, Operation Paperback has shipped over 1.3 million books to locations around the globe. MPC’s Mission Committee operates a gathering point for book donations. Members and friends are invited to deposit their books in the appropriately labeled box in the Gathering Area. Gently used paperback books with no pages missing or covers loose are appreciated. Religious books and those with sexually explicit photos are not permitted.
When the box gets full, it is appropriately wrapped and shipped to an address provided by Operation Paperback. Shipping costs are covered by the Committee’s budget. Cathay Snyder administers the program for MPC.
Truck Stop Ministry
... is in its 26th year of serving the needs of over-the-road truck drivers and other travelers at the Harrisburg and Carlisle Pike truck stops. This area is one of the heaviest-traveled trucking corridors in the country. Truck drivers lead lonely lives and are very prone to temptations. Go to www.carlisletruckstopministry.org.
One of this multi-denominational ministry's most visual attributes is its trailer that sits at a prominent truck stop. The trailer serves as a combination chapel and office and is staffed full time by Truck Stop Chaplain Dan Lehigh. Chaplain Dan provides help to people with food, gas, clothing, personal care items and housing. The program distributes about 1500 tracts and books/Bibles per year. When needed, he conducts funeral services. Volunteers help conduct Sunday services in the trailer. Dan provides about 80 hospital/prison visits each year.
All this is provided though congregational and individual prayers and financial support. MPC contributes financially, invites members to attend the Spring and Fall Banquets, and bakes cookies for distribution to the drivers over the Thanksgiving/Christmas Holiday season. For more information check out the website or call Cathay Snyder, Chair, Mission Committee.
