My favorite podcasts

Two years ago, I began experiencing worsening of my vision
and could no longer spend as much time looking at a computer screen or reading
as I used to. (It’s a complicated story,
perhaps for another time and my vision is a little better now.) Looking for an alternative way to spend my
time, I turned to listening to podcasts.
I listen to quite a variety of podcasts on different
subjects such as religion, true crime, history, science, and language to name a
few. Two of my favorite podcasts are Everything Happens, by Kate Bowler, and
The Bible Project Podcast, by Jon Collins and Tim Mackie.
The description of the Everything Happens podcast is “Life
isn’t always bright and shiny, as Kate Bowler knows. Kate is a young mother,
writer and professor who, at age 35, was suddenly diagnosed with Stage IV
cancer. In warm, insightful, often funny conversations, Kate talks with people
about what they’ve learned in difficult times.” Kate gently and compassionately interviews those facing pain, grief,
chronic illness and other hard circumstances. I love that she does not offer simplistic solutions or platitudes but acknowledges
the other person’s pain often saying, “that must have been so hard” and asking
them if they would mind sharing their story. Kate’s sense of humor lightens what could be very dark conversations, showing
some of the absurdities of life.
The mission of The Bible Project is to help people
experience the Bible as a unified story that leads to Jesus. Cofounders of The
Bible Project, Tim Mackie and Jon Collins, have conversations about key themes
and stories of the Bible in their weekly podcast. This past year, they have been slowly making
their way through the Torah, the first five books of the Bible. While diving
deep into these passages, they are easy to understand, particularly because Jon
will stop Tim from getting carried away and rephrase what he is hearing to be
sure that it understood. These
conversations are thought-provoking and have given me new insights into how to
read the Bible.
I hope you will give these podcasts a try. If you listen to podcasts, what are some of
your favorites? I’m looking for new ones as I’m caught up on the back catalog
of my current choices.
