We began our time together with fond remembrances of Ruth Ann Neubold, long-time book club member, and all the wonderful things about her that we will miss. She added much to our group and our lives. She will be missed.

We had a wonderful discussion of The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Willliams. There is so much to this book that we hardly knew where to start. We were very interested in the historical account of how the twelve-volume Oxford English Dictionary was compiled, very painstakingly and very slowly! Williams makes us think about why some words were included and while other words were considered unimportant or inappropriate by the male scholars.

We found this very fascinating, but also enjoyed the fictional story of Esme, the daughter of one of the scholars. Her life as a child and young woman was quite unique with the historical background of women's suffrage and World War I. Her project of collecting "lost words" becomes a true lifelong quest. I think that we would all recommend this debut novel.

Next month we will be reading an interesting memoir Dinners with Ruth by Nina Totenberg. We learn much about her life as well as her close friendship with Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
